Geography

Our Geography Intent

The study of geography is about more than just memorizing places on a map. It's about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents. And in the end, it's about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together.

At St James we aim to ensure that children have a deep-rooted understanding of their local area, which is then broadened to understand their sense of place within the wider world.

We acknowledge that children need to revisit and systematically build on their locational knowledge year on year. This recognises the fact that for many of our children, school is the main source of this knowledge.

We aim to ensure that children retain and build on their locational knowledge, with all year groups reviewing the locational knowledge required for that year and all preceding years at the start of learning linked to Geography.

At St James we widen the children’s experiences of the world using technology to view the world through a different lens and we celebrate the cultural diversity within the school to enable the students to be global citizens.

Through quality field trips and studies, the children of St James will fuel the need to learn and enquire beyond their own locality and have access to rich, first-hand experiences.

We acknowledge that our children need to revisit and systematically build on their mapping knowledge through exposure to quality resources and that our children need to revisit and systematically build on their Geographical vocabulary and skills.
